Review: OVERSHARE at Greenwich Theatre
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Four Stars)
OVERSHARE at Greenwich Theatre, written and performed by Eleanor Hill, is a raw and darkly funny one-woman show. Based on Hill’s own experiences, the show is a vulnerable and emotionally charged journey through grief, trauma, and obsession in the digital age. It’s a 70-minute deep-dive into a millennial psyche in freefall.
The entire play unfolds in the confines of Eleanor’s chaotic bedroom, brought to life with detailed and thoughtful set design by Constance Villemot. Cluttered bedside tables, a wall of photos strung with fairy lights, and a collection of clothing trophies stolen from various men all help ground Eleanor’s emotional unravelling in a space that feels intensely personal and realistic.
Our protagonist is a thirty-year-old woman grieving a parent lost in childhood while spiralling further into an unhealthy fixation on a married 50-year-old man she has been seeing for the past eight years. Her coping mechanisms? Cava and oversharing online, live streaming tearful monologues and chaotic rants from her bedroom. Thanks to Matt Powell’s inventive video design, these livestreams are projected in real-time on to the back wall of the stage, complete with Instagram comments and changing filters throughout. It’s a smart commentary on how we perform our pain online, craving validation through our phones.
One minute, Hill has the audience laughing with self-deprecating humour and meme references while the next she delivers a gut punch with reflections on loss, mental illness, and trauma. Her emotional range is impressive, shifting gears with startling authenticity, and consistently keeping the audience engaged throughout the entire performance.
Adding to the immersive nature of the show, the audience is actively encouraged to have their phones out to film, photograph or even DM Eleanor during the performance. It’s an audacious move that, rather than feeling gimmicky, perfectly aligns with the show’s themes.
Blurring the line between theatre and social media, in OVERSHARE Eleanor Hill has created a truly unique theatrical experience.
OVERSHARE runs at Greenwich Theatre until 25th May 2025.
